Installing Lights in Bolivia

A trip to Quirembaya and Pocobaya

In September a party of 10 undertook the installation of LED lights in two villages in Bolivia. The group traveled to Lima, Peru via Houston, Texas. Seven of the party came from Canmore, Alberta, two from Calgary and one from Hagersville, Ontario.

From Lima the group continued by plane to Cusco, where they spent two days at Los Ninos hotel, acclimatizing to the altitude and visiting Machu Picchu. The next stage was a full-day train ride to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The train climbs up a gradually broadening valley that emerges on the altiplano and provided a new high point in altitude for the journey.

At this highest point the train stopped for a while to allow oxygen deprived travellers to purchase a variety of hand made goods from local vendors. Bargains were to be had in llama and alpaca wool sweaters, gloves and hats; warm slippers in alpaca skin were also available and when the group rejoined the train the immediate problem was where to pack the new acquisitions!
