The Isla del Sol and on to Sorata

The Hotel Rosario in Copacabana was our base for two nights and we took the opportunity to visit the Isla del Sol, where we walked from the northern end of the island to the southern end, seeing the old Inca settlements on the way and enjoying magnificent views of Lake Titicaca and of the Cordillera Real, notably Illampu.

We took a tour bus to reach our base destination in Bolivia, the town of Sorata. We crossed a narrow neck of the lake on a ferry, our bus taking a pontoon and we crossing by power boat. There we met hordes of brightly dressed children heading for a festival in Copacabana. The bus took us across the altiplano and then we paused to look at the tremendous views from the edge where the valleys drop down to the Amazon jungle, though we did not go that far. The road followed a tortuous route of zigzags losing height rapidly as we descended to Sorata at a mere 9,200 feet elevation!
